China’s Chang’e-7 mission launched in August 2026 to explore the Moon’s south polar region. The mission includes an orbiter, lander, rover, and a hopping vehicle designed to investigate difficult lunar terrain.
One of its major scientific goals is to search for water ice, particularly inside permanently shadowed areas around the lunar south pole. Finding accessible water could be important for future human exploration because water can potentially support life and be used to produce resources such as oxygen and hydrogen.
