NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory observed a rare event in July 2026 in which a massive black hole was seen shredding a star. What made the event especially interesting was its location far outside the center of its host galaxy.
The event is known as a tidal disruption event. It happens when a star gets too close to a black hole and is torn apart by the black hole’s enormous gravitational forces.
