In 2025, China became the first country to launch a nationwide AI-powered traffic management system. The system uses artificial intelligence to control traffic lights, predict congestion, and guide vehicles in real time. It’s a huge step toward creating smarter and safer cities.
The project started in 2023 under the “Smart Mobility 2030 Plan.” By early 2025, it was fully operational in more than 100 major Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. AI cameras and sensors were placed across highways and busy intersections. They collect live data — like vehicle speed, traffic density, and accident reports — and send it to cloud-based systems for instant analysis.
The results were impressive. Traffic delays dropped by over 25%, and accident response time became almost twice as fast. The system can even detect emergencies, like an ambulance stuck in traffic, and automatically adjust nearby lights to clear a route.
This technology is powered by China’s leading AI companies, including Baidu and Huawei. The system runs on 5G networks, allowing instant data sharing between vehicles and traffic centers. Cities using the AI control system also saw a major cut in fuel waste and air pollution.
For China, this isn’t just a tech upgrade — it’s part of a bigger plan to build “smart cities” across the country. The government aims to connect every part of urban life through AI, from transport and energy to waste management.
Experts believe this model will soon be adopted worldwide. Many European and Gulf countries are already studying the Chinese system to launch similar projects.
