In August 2026, NASA researchers reported evidence suggesting that liquid nitrogen may recently have flowed beneath the surface of Pluto. The finding came from a new analysis of images collected by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft during its 2015 flyby.
The evidence was found around Sputnik Planitia, the large heart-shaped region on Pluto. Researchers believe liquid nitrogen could rise through cracks in the surface, showing that Pluto may be more geologically active than previously thought.
