The First Islamic School for Transgender Persons was Opened in Bangladesh on 06 November 2020. In November 2020, a Bangladeshi religious charity opened the very first Islamic school for the Hijra people, a transgender, and third-gender community often exposed to discrimination due to conservative South Asian societal and religious values. Most of the time, members of the Hijra community are forced into becoming beggars or sex workers due to chronic poverty, violence, and a lack of formal education. At the Islamic school, located in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital, students of all ages are able to learn how to read the Quran and the principles of Islam alongside English, math, Bengali, and vocational training.
