A NASA-led study published in July 2026 challenged the long-held idea that Earth’s geomagnetic response to increasingly powerful solar storms reaches a fixed ceiling. Researchers found that the apparent limit may have resulted from measurement uncertainty.
The finding suggests that extremely powerful solar storms could produce much stronger effects on Earth’s magnetic environment than previously estimated. Such storms can interfere with satellites, navigation systems, radio communications, and power infrastructure.
